Het huidige debat over de multiculturele samenleving wordt gedomineerd door debenadrukking van onderlinge verschillen, leidend tot processen en gevoelens van uitsluiting. Met dit filmpje poog ik een andere kant van de discussie te laten zien. De kant die zich richt op gelijkenissen in plaats van verschillen en op het handelingsvermogen van het individu. Door met elkaar in contact te komen worden stereotypen doorbroken. Met een lach naar een vreemde, een helpende hand, of een leuke vraag op straat. Iedereen doet mee. Iedereen wil blij zijn.

Reza Aslan een aantal lezingen over de islam in Europa, in de drie grote Nederlandse steden. Eutopia haalt deze flamboyante en populaire spreker naar Nederland vanwege zijn inspirerende perspectief dat de islam wel degelijk in staat is tot verandering en modernisering.

Hij is bekend van zijn bestsellers Geen god dan God: oorsprong, ontwikkeling en toekomst van de islam en How to win a cosmic war: god, globalization, and the end of war on terror. In zijn boeken vertelt Aslan over de islam in de moderne wereld. Hij maakt onderscheid tussen religie en geloof en geeft inzicht in de historische context van het terrorisme. Een coreferent zal Aslan interviewen over al deze thema’s en uiteraard is er ruimte voor vragen en discussie met het publiek.

Darius Rejali traces the development and application of one torture technique after another in the last century, and he reaches startling conclusions. As the twentieth century progressed, he argues, democracies not only tortured, but set the international pace for torture.

Dictatorships may have tortured more, and more indiscriminately, but the United States, Britain, and France pioneered and exported techniques that have become the lingua franca of modern torture: methods that leave no marks.
Under the watchful eyes of reporters and human rights activists, low-level authorities in the world’s oldest democracies were the first to learn that to scar a victim was to advertise iniquity and invite scandal. Long before the CIA even existed, police and soldiers turned instead to “clean” techniques, such as torture by electricity, ice, water, noise, drugs, and stress positions.

As democracy and human rights spread after World War II, so too did these methods. Rejali takes up the challenging question of whether torture works and will also address what to expect of the new Obama administration and the prospects for the future of torture internationally.
Darius Rejali, professor and Chair of political science at Reed College, is a nationally recognised expert on government torture and interrogation. Iranian-born, Rejali has spent his scholarly career reflecting on violence, and, specifically, reflecting on the causes, consequences, and meaning of modern torture in our world. His work spans concerns in political science, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, history, and critical social theory. He is a 2003 Carnegie Scholar, recognized for his innovative approaches to the study of violence.
Torture and Democracy (2007) is Rejali’s most recent book. It is an unrelenting examination of the use of torture by democracies in the 20th century. It won the 2007 Human Rights Book of the Year Award from the American Political Science Association.

Rejali is also the author of Torture and Modernity: Self, Society and State in Modern Iran (1994) as well as many recent articles on violence including masculinity and torture, media representations of torture, the political thought of Osama bin Ladin, the history of electric torture, the practice of stoning in the Middle East, the treatment of refugees who have been tortured, and theories of ethnic rape.

A writer, editor, broadcaster, and critical commentator on Islam, culture, and science, Ziauddin Sardar is one of the world’s leading Muslim public intellectuals.

Born in Pakistan, raised and educated in Britain, he is currently Visiting Professor of Postcolonial Studies at the City University, London. Editor of Futures, a journal of forecasting, planning, and futures studies, and co-editor of Third Text, a prestigious journal of arts and visual culture, Sardar is also author of more than forty books on Islam, science policy, media, postcolonial and cultural studies, travel, and autobiography.

Dit jaar precies achthonderd jaar geleden werd in het huidige Tadzjikistan de dichter en filosoof Rumi geboren. Hij geniet in het Westen al veel langer bekendheid, maar in de laatste decennia van de twintigste eeuw heeft zijn populariteit een enorme vlucht genomen. Ter gelegenheid van zijn achthonderdste verjaardag hebben we een bundel samengesteld met analyses van zijn werk.

Amerika is een droomland. Het land van pioniers, het beloofde land van vrijheid, welvaart en rechtvaardigheid. Naast dit droomland Amerika leeft ook een demonisch beeld van Amerika. Een van een agressief Amerika, de weergaloze grootmacht, de onethische kapitalist en het intolerante Amerika. De wereld heeft een ambivalent relatie met Amerika. Amerika is onze gezamenlijke droom en nachtmerrie tegelijkertijd. De nieuwe wereld waar iedere migrant van droomt om ooit deel van uit te maken en tegelijkertijd is Amerika een angstaanjagende indringer, niet te stoppen en niet te weerhouden.

ambivalente relatie van de wereld met Amerika.

Ivan Krastev is politicoloog en voorzitter van het Centrum voor Liberale Strategieën in Sofia, Bulgarije. Sinds 2004 staat hij aan het hoofd van de Internationale Balkan Commissie. Hij leidt tevens het Open Century Project van de Central European University in Budapest.
